Exiled, Not Silenced: Journalism Under Siege

On September 19, 2022, the first event organized by the Center for Media Integrity of the Americas, “Exiled, Not Silenced, Journalism Under Siege” took take place in the Hall of the Americas at the Organization of American States.

The event, attended by more than 50 members of the International Community, press and media, was moderated by the Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression, Pedro Vaca, and in which the following journalists participated: Mónica Baró from Cuba, Carlos Fernando Chamorro from Nicaragua, as well as Boris Muñoz and Luz Mely Reyes from Venezuela, all of whom had to leave their countries of origin due to pressure from their respective governments.

The event was lauded by the participants as a crucial piece in understanding the hurdles faced by journalists in countries who actively attack the media. It also highlighted the importance in supporting said journalists who have had to escape their respective countries but still plan to work in journalism from abroad.
